Day 8: July 11. 2019

We were discharged from the Air Force Lodge, and after breakfast, we headed out of town for our first fuel stop. On the way, Brother Larry saw a wolf - what he described as being twice as large as a German Shepard.

We fueled up at a typical Yukon Territory gas station:

It was something out of Mad Max. And with that, we were off.

Along the road were beautiful purple flowers.

For our second fuel stop, we gassed up at the Yukon Hotel:

They had terrific pie and cinnamon rolls.

We had not seen a policeman since Calgary - not one on the Alaska Highway, until here - at a doughnut shop!

We followed several rivers and crossed several bridges.

We ended up on Whitehorse - the capital of the Yukon Territory, and home to 75% of the population in the Province - all 37,000 of them.

I have learned several lessons on the Alaska highway: wear wool socks, not cotton socks. And wear a full facemask helmet. I have an open face, and the trucks going the other way kick-up gravel chips - which hurts your face. Don't want to hurt the face!

You meet all kinds on the road. This guy owned a turkey farm, contracted cancer and sold his business. Now, he rides his BMW all across the country. He left from Key West and is going to Prudhoe Bay, as he wants to travel the entire diagonal across North America.

If you zoom in on his stickers, you will see that is be a member of the Iron Butts. He has ridden coast-to-coast in less than 50 hours, he has 1,500 miles in one day - and on and on. That is some serious riding.

Whitehorse has an interesting downtown area. The Yukon River isn't rapids, but the current is incredibly fast.

They have some cool hotels:

And they even have a totem pole - just like the Chicago Lakefront.

We traveled 287 miles today, and saw little wildlife except for some blackbears. Our trip total is 3,355 miles.

Tomorrow, we head to Beaver Creek for our last night in Canada. We are told from people heading south that there were long delays due to the roads being closed as a result of wildfires.
