Day 10: July 13, 2019
When we left this morning, it was 49 degrees and raining. But the rain soon stopped. And later in the day, the sun came out and the temperatures reached the 70s. Not too bad considering they forecasted rain for the entire day.
It was 17 miles to the Border after passing Canadian Customs, which is a little odd. Getting back in-country was a breeze. The only questions were how long I was in Canada, and if I brought anything I bought in Canada. With that, we entered the good 'ol USA.
There is an obelisk and a line marking the border.
A man between two countries:
The sign welcoming us home.
In Delta Junction, the Alaska Highway ends, and the road becomes the Richardson Highway.
We continued on to Fairbanks. At Edelson Air Force Base along the way, there was the annual air show. And people just stopped their cars on the roadway and watched. Being resourceful souls, we detoured around the road obstruction, on a gravel road. I was praying the whole time that no one would receive a flat tire.
Yes, we actually saw on sign on our detour about a dog sled crossing.
We continued on through North Pole, Alaska until we reached Fairbanks.
We went to the local Harley shop to buy a tee shirt, we had dinner, and on the way home I was almost flattened by a car turning left coming in my direction. It collided with the pick-up truck to my left. It was close enough that the plastic shrapnel from the impact hit me. 100' more feet ahead, and it would have clobbered me.
Along the way, I saw a large cat about 150 yards off the roadway. It was brown, and had a large, thick tail which went straight out, not drooping. We researched the issue over the best Alaska Eggs Benedict Magellan has ever had.
Our internet research indicated that there are a lot of Lynx in the area. But Lynx are much smaller than the cat I saw and the tail is different. Our conclusion is that it was a mountain lion. How cool is that.
Today, we rode 350 miles for a trip total of 3,998 miles.
Tomorrow, it is a drive down to Anchorage, past Denali, and to a hotel for my last night on the trip before returning to the land of milk and honey.
