Cusco

The Plaza in Cusco.  Locals.  Stone tunnel where the Inca mummified their kings. Plaza in Cusco. Christo Blanco - White Christ in the park overlooking Cuzco - modeled after Christ the Redeemer in Rio. Saqsaywaman, pronounced by Americans as “sexy woman” is a huge Inca temple overlooking Cuzco. “Saqsay” means spotted and “waman” means falcon. The Peruvians called this area "Qosqo," pronounced Costco by the locals. The Spanish could not fit it within their language, and changed it to "Cuzco." The central image in this monument means a lot to the Inca, but frankly, it was only a few hours ago and I've forgotton already. The center three lines represent the three parts of the Inca culture religion: Condor, Snake and Puma. These huge stones were quarred, cut, set on a foundation and fit up by the Inca. Note the fine masonry work. The structures were much higher....

At Macchu Pichu

Aquas Calientes is along a river. This is the walk from the train down to the bus loading area for the drive to MP. At MP. You would think that the mountain in the background is Macchu Pichu. It isn't, MP is behind u s. Our guide said that in Peru, they don't think of winter and summer. They think of the wet season and the dry season. The rain has a tremenous effect on agriculture. Accordingly, the windows track either the winter solstice or the summer solstice, which told the farmers about what precipitation to expect. Machu Picchu averages 83 inces of rain each year. Rain means everything to them because they were agriculture based.  Hydration is still very important.  Note the mortarless, stone joints. Incredibly precise.  A hinge . Again, note the stone precision.  There is a system of dykes and waterways which flows through MP. ...
